CORD
STANDARD
A stack of cut wood 4' high, 4' wide, and 8' long.
FACE
A 4' by 8' stack of cut wood made from split wood or logs that are typically 12", 18", or 24" long.
FLITCH
A portion of a sawn-off log that cannot be used as finished lumber due to bark or defects on one or more sides. It is usually remanufactured into lumber or veneer.
LUMBER
DIMENSIONAL
Lumber that is finished or planed and cut to a standardized width and depth specified in inches.
Examples of common lumber sizes:
✦ 2 by 4 (actual size: 1½" by 3½")
✦ 2 by 6 (actual size: 1½" by 5½")
✦ 4 by 4 (actual size: 3½" by 3½")
ROUGH SAWN
Lumber that is originally cut from logs without smoothing or sanding.
Typical "nominal" dimensions:

LIVE OR
NATURAL EDGE
A style of furniture where the crafter incorporates the natural edge of the wood into the design of the piece.
SAWING
A sawing method where the log is sawn, turned to a new face, sawn and turned again up to five times.
QUARTER SAWN
A sawing method generally defined as lumber sawn with growth rings at angles of 60 to 90 degrees to the widest face. This material is highly sought after and can be found in many fine homes.
GRADE SAWN
SEASONING
The process of drying lumber or other forms of wood by natural (air-dried) or artificial (kiln-dried) processes. The Colorado Timberking uses a Nyle dehumidification kiln.
VENEER
A thin layer of finely grained wood that is glued to an unattractive surface or glued together to make plywood.
